"Intel HD Video" using Intel integrated graphics and cool looking home PC's ..............

For some reason there is still doubt out there in computerland that an integrated graphics chipset can output high definition video in all its full 1080P glory.

To make things easier for customers to be certain that maximum sofa-based bliss can be theirs - we will be labeling PC’s with this flashy new logo:

I have already blogged about gaming on Intel integrated graphics, but what about video?

For some reason there is still doubt out there in computerland that an integrated graphics chipset can output high definition video in all its full 1080P glory.

To make things easier for customers to be certain that maximum sofa-based bliss can be theirs - we will be labeling PC’s with this flashy new logo:

I spoke to Intel’s Stephanie Grisafi about an HD demo at the recent CES show:

Full 1080P support is available for the Intel G965, G33, G35 and future chipsets - expect to see the logos adorning boxes in your favourite computer shop soon.

However, if you want to enjoy the bazillion pixels that HD affords in your living room - you will need to get a pretty enough PC as well (my wife banished my 1st Media Centre PC from the living room).

Intel® High Definition Audio....................

Integrated audio for today and tomorrow
Intel has worked with the industry to develop a new specification for integrated audio that is capable of delivering the features and high-end performance of an add-in audio card. Intel® High Definition Audio (Intel® HD Audio) is capable of playing back more channels at higher quality than previous integrated audio formats. In addition, Intel High Definition Audio has the technology needed to support the latest and greatest audio content. By enabling enhanced usage models, Intel High Definition Audio, available with the Intel® Express Chipsets, will also change how computer users interact with sound.

The challenge to find better audio

When AC‘97 was initially developed, users were typically listening to only music and movies with stereo sound. With the success of DVD movies encoded with Dolby* Digital and DTS* multi-channel audio formats, users have become accustomed to listening in full surround sound with anywhere from six to eight speakers. While AC‘97 technology has struggled to keep pace with all these advancements, Intel High Definition Audio is designed specifically for the high-quality multi-channel audio experiences. Newer audio and video encoding/decoding algorithms also enable a higher-quality listening experience.

More and more consumers are moving their computers into the living room or family room so they can enjoy digital music or movies throughout the house on state-of-the-art multi-channel audio systems or big screen TVs. With better speakers connected to their computers, the limitations of current computer sound subsystems, whether integrated or add-in, can degrade the overall digital experience.

Many consumers are also asking for the ability to play two different audio streams through their PC at the same time-perhaps classical music in the study and a movie in the living room. These demands cannot be met with previous audio solutions.

An outstanding audio experience

Intel HD Audio delivers significant improvements over previous generation integrated audio and sound cards. Intel HD Audio hardware is capable of delivering the support and sound quality for up to eight channels at 192 kHz/32-bit quality, while the AC‘97 specification can only support six channels at 48 kHz/20-bit. In addition, Intel HD Audio is architected to prevent the occasional glitches or pops that other audio solutions can have by providing dedicated system bandwidth for critical audio functions.

Innovative uses for the digital home

Dolby Laboratories* selected Intel HD Audio to bring Dolby-quality surround sound technologies to the PC, as part of their recently announced PC Logo Program. The combination of these technologies marks an important milestone in delivering quality digital audio to consumers. Intel HD Audio is able to support all the Dolby technologies, including the latest Dolby Pro Logic* IIx, which makes it possible to enjoy older stereo content in 7.1 channel surround sound.

The Dolby PC Entertainment Experience is available exclusively on Intel-based PCs, including the Intel® Core™2 Quad processor, Intel® Core™2 Duo processor, Pentium® 4 Processor with HT Technology† or Intel® Pentium® D processor combined with the Intel® Express Chipset Family with Intel® High Definition Audio. The Express Chipset family includes:
Intel® G965, P965, Q965, Q963, 946GZ, and 946PL Express Chipsets
Intel® 975X, 955X, 945G and 945P Express Chipsets
Intel® 925XE and 925X Express Chipsets
Intel® 915G, 915P, 915GV, 915GL, 915PL Express Chipsets
Intel® 910GL Express Chipset

Consumers also want the ability to play back two different audio tracks, such as a CD and a DVD simultaneously, which can't be done using current audio solutions. Intel HD Audio features multi-streaming capabilities that give users the ability to send two or more different audio streams to different locations at the same time, from the same PC.
Send a game's sound through 5.1 speakers while the Internet chatting audio is sent through your headset
Send a game's sound through 5.1 speakers while the Internet chatting audio is sent through your headset.
A DVD movie with 5.1 audio can be sent to a surround sound system in the living room, while you listen to digital music on the PC.
Send a DVD movie with 5.1 audio to a surround sound system in the living room, while you listen to digital music and surf the Web on the PC.

Microsoft* has chosen Intel HD Audio as the main architecture for their new Unified Audio Architecture* (UAA), which provides one driver that will support all Intel HD Audio controllers and codecs. While the Microsoft driver is expected to support basic Intel HD Audio functions, codec vendors are expected to differentiate their solutions by offering enhanced Intel HD audio solutions. The result is high-quality PC based audio that delivers a seamless convergence of digital entertainment between the PC and consumer electronic devices.

Enhanced features

Intel HD Audio also enables enhanced voice capture through the use of array microphones, giving users more accurate speech input. While other audio implementations have limited support for simple array microphones, Intel HD Audio supports larger array microphones. By increasing the size of the array microphone, users get incredibly clean input through better noise cancellation and beam forming. This produces higher-quality input to voice recognition, Voice over IP (VoIP), and other voice-driven activities.

Intel HD Audio also provides improvements that support better jack retasking. The computer can sense when a device is plugged into an audio jack, determine what kind of device it is, and change the port function if the device has been plugged into the wrong port. For example, if a microphone is plugged into a speaker jack, the computer will recognize the error and can change the jack to function as a microphone jack. This is an important step in getting audio to a point where it ‘just works‘-users won‘t need to worry about getting the right device plugged into the right audio jack.

The solution for the future

Designed for "glitch-free" audio playback, multi-streaming, jack retasking, and UAA support, Intel HD Audio offers an audio solution for years to come. As one of the many new technologies introduced with the Intel® 955X, 925, 915, and 910 Express chipset family, and now the Intel® 945 Express chipset family, Intel HD Audio enhances the end-user experience and enables the convergence of digital entertainment for both PCs and Consumer Electronics (CE) products.

†Intel® Hyper-Threading Technology (Intel® HT Technology) requires a computer system with an Intel® processor supporting Intel HT Technology and an Intel HT Technology enabled chipset, BIOS, and operating system. Performance will vary depending on the specific hardware and software you use. See www.intel.com/products/ht/hyperthreading_more.htm for more information including details on which processors support Intel HT Technology.

Some HD Audio functionality is dependent on actual implementation, controller, and codec.

Dell's Inspiron Zino HD on sale now in America: starts at $229, doubles as an HTPC.......................

Dell has taken its sweet time in bringing the 7.75- x 7.75- x 3.5-inch Inspiron Zino HD to market, but just 24 hours after it made its market debut across the pond, this little zinger is finally available to the Yanks in attendance. Starting at just $229, the mini PC is far more exhilarating than most ho hum nettops. Oh sure, the base configuration is fairly unexciting, but thankfully Dell enables you to add up to 8GB of memory, a 1.8GHz dual-core AMD Athlon Neo X2 6850e CPU, up to 1TB of HDD space, an optional Blu-ray drive, a 512MB ATI Radeon HD 4330 discrete GPU and WiFi to the mix. 'Course, speccing it out will obviously raise the price substantially, but it's always nice to see more power than anticipated within such a minuscule box. Of note, Dell also mentions that an optional TV tuner, wireless keyboard and mouse are available, but at least for now, the TV tuner is nowhere to be found in the configuration pages. Other inclusions are a 4-in-1 card reader, four USB 2.0 sockets and a pair of eSATA ports. Who says HTPCs have to breathe fire?

Update: We've just heard that the TV tuner won't be available at launch (sounds a lot like what happened with the Mini 10), so there goes those dreams of immediately gratifying your urge for a new HTPC of the smallest scale.

Dell shows off Blu-ray-wielding Zino HD...........

A rainbow of cute Dell Zino HDs

Dell has announced the Zino HD, a colourful Mac Mini-alike small form-factor PC with up to a 1TB of storage and a Blu-ray player built into its tiny shell.

A choice of 10 interchangeable colours and designs means you can customise the Zino’s appearance just for you, and while compromises are inevitable to achieve its reduced size, the headline spec is surprisingly impressive.

AMD Athlon processors provide the power, and there’s room for ATI Mobility Radeon graphics and up to 1TB of storage alongside 8GB of RAM. The Zino gives you numerous options for talking to other devices, often a shortcoming of ultra-compact PCs. Along with its Wi-Fi capability, there’s a 4-in-1 card reader, four USB connectors and the all-important HDMI port for beaming out high-def pictures from that Blu-ray drive.

The Zino HD is available now starting at an impressive £299, though you’ll have to go sans Blu-ray and be happy trundling along on 2GB of RAM. For the all-singing, all-dancing one with all the trimmings, you’ll have to hand over £744.

Intel to Start Shipping P55 Motherboards.....................

Core i5 processors are based on the same Nehalem architecture that Core i7 is based upon, but come equipped with integrated dual-channel DDR3 memory controller as well as integrated graphics. The graphics will be based on existing Intel graphics solution, and not Intel's work-in-progress Larrabee.

On that note, many motherboard manufacturers are already showing off samples of LGA 1160 socket based motherboards, anticipating that Intel will begin to ship its LGA1160 CPUs sometime in July. These P55 boards will be the first to support Lynnfield Core i5 CPUs and will support the Clarksdale CPUs as well. This is good news for consumers who want to pinch pennies, as the Corei7s are not flying off store shelves as many have hoped and the cheaper Nehalem more than likely is a better financial choice.

It's speculated that many of these P55 motherboards will make an appearance in the final form at Computex in June, one month before Intel is suppose to release Core i5 CPUs. Of course, Intel may very well push back the release date, thus forcing motherboard manufacturers to do the same, as Intel originally said the chip would launch in late 2009.

Intel's new processor - a game changer?............................

Posting about the semiconductor industry has been a cheerless task lately so I am finding it satisfying to be writing a positive account of Nehalem, Intel's newest microprocessor.

By all accounts a great product, is it significant enough to truly make a difference to Intel or the industry as a whole?

Before we can answer that question, we should present a little background. Nehalem is the codename for the new Intel processor microarchitecture. Nehalem processors use a 45 nm manufacturing method, currently Intel's most advanced geometry though 35 nm is already in the works. What distinguishes Nehalem from its predecessors is that the new chip has a built-in memory controller for each CPU and there are four CPUs per chip. Another major improvement is the replacement of the old front-side bus with QuickPath, a new high-speed interconnect system that routes data between the CPU, memory, graphics controllers, etc.

So much for the geek-speak (yes, I love this stuff). The bottom line is that the outcome of these architectural decisions is blazing speed. Intel is leaving competitors; ie, AMD, in the dust. The Nehalem chips, now branded as Core-i7 and optimized for single socket systems and dual socket systems are now the standard against which other PC processors and Windows-based servers will be judged. Various spokespersons at Intel have said that Nehalem represents the biggest performance jump since the introduction of the Pentium Pro back in 1995

This is like a challenge to a lot of the folks who run tech blogs so there has been a flurry of benchmark testing and it appears that Intel's claims are accurate. Word is that Intel's partners are reporting performance improved by a factor of two and in some cases as much as three. Taking a shot at Sun and IBM, Intel further claims that the era of proprietary and RISC/Unix computing is over, declaring that a two socket box running the high end Nehalem processors can easily compete with the IBM Power server and Sun UltraSparc.

In addition, the new chips are far more power efficient than predecessors and competitors, drawing 70 watts less than comparable systems. Where this gets interesting is when you consider the additional performance of the new processors combined with their power efficiency, the performance-per-watt difference is big enough to act as a significant differentiator.

Climbing on the virtualization bandwagon, Intel has included features that are intended to reduce the overhead of running in virtual environments so that performance approaches that of running on native machines.

Intel's various customers are now faced with a situation where they need to immediately incorporate the new Nehalem chips in their products because their competitors certainly will. The speed advantage the chip offers can't be ignored so, in order keep up with their rivals, Dell, HP, Cisco and IBM, for example, will be forced to quickly roll out products with the new processor. Apple already offers a rackmount server utilizing two processors and claiming an 89% improvement in performance-per-watt.

IBM and SUN and the other vendors of Unix-based servers such as H-P will also have to answer Intel's claims that the speed and reliability advantage no longer belongs to Unix.

Interestingly, AMD pioneered certain aspects of the kind of architecture Intel has adopted but AMD is now in the position of having to play catch up.

So, game changer or not?

There are some who say that the raw power of these processors will eventually transform all kinds of computer tasks. What used to take hours can be done in minutes. This means hard things can be done quickly and really difficult things become reasonable to attempt. Since versions of these chips can be used in workstations and PCs, not just servers, we are now going to see a leap of computing power put into the hands of individuals. Where will that take us? Hard to predict but it will no doubt be somewhere no one expected.

As for Intel, it has to be a significant positive. The company, always the major player in the processor market, takes a clear leadership role and the new processor family becomes the flagship product in the Digital Enterprise Group business segment that generates more than half of Intel's revenue. While the Mobility Group has shown greater growth through the surge in notebook and netbook computing, the new Nehalem processor assures Intel that it's bread and butter business segment will maintain its strength.

More to the point, however, will the new processor allow Intel to generate superior growth? That is an important question. Looking at the following chart, it is clear that Intel, despite its strong position in the markets in which it participates, has actually been an under-performer over the last five years.

So Intel currently holds the high ground. Sun Microsystems is staggering, racking up losses and failing to nail down a deal with IBM. AMD is splitting itself up and trying to reduce losses. Dell is also suffering profitability problems. IBM is coasting on its services revenue. H-P seems to be more involved in cost cutting and integrating their EDS acquisition. Intel seems to be the company exhibiting leadership in R&D.

Can this leadership translate into earnings? Introducing this product during a recession implies sales in the near term may not set the world on fire but as the economy begins to improve and enterprise IT budgets loosen up, Intel is well positioned to grab share from AMD and Sun. Those companies who offer both Windows-based servers and Unix-based servers may see a shift in product mix toward servers with Nehalem processors. This means they could become even better customers of Intel. So the potential for significant earnings growth is there.

With Intel currently under $16, up 30% from its recent lows, and its PE just over 16 it would seem that the company is fairly priced at the moment. The new processor family has the potential to add value to the Intel franchise at a time when it needs a higher-margin driver of sales growth to offset the move toward netbooks.

The contest, then, is well underway and Nehalem might just be the game-changer that Intel needs.
